Otoplasty is the surgery done to reposition prominent ears or "jug" to a more normal position, more close to the head or to reduce the size of large ears. Generally, it is a surgery performed in children between 4 and 14 years. The ears are almost completely grown at 4 years, so the surgery is performed as soon as possible, the lower the ridiculous pass the child at school. Otoplasty can also be performed in adults, with no major risks at this age.
¿WHO IS THE IDEAL CANDIDATE ?
Most plastic surgeons recommend that parents observe the child's behavior in relation to their prominent ears; should not insist on the surgery until the child so desires.
In the first consultation, the plastic surgeon will assess the problem and recommend the most effective technique for you. It will also provide instructions to prepare for surgery.
ANESTESIA
If the child is small, the plastic surgeon will recommend performing surgery under general anesthesia.
SURGERY
Otoplasty usually lasts between 2 and 3 hours, although complex cases may take longer. The technique depends on the particular problem. Sometimes it may be necessary to remove part of the cartilage to get a more natural ear. The scar resulting from otoplasty is concealed behind the ear.
BACK TO NORMAL
Most patients, children and adults, are well within hours of surgery, although it may be advisable to stay overnight in the clinic until the effects of general anesthesia wear off. After surgery a bandage around his head is placed. The ears may hurt a bit the first few days, but is easily relieved with medication. In a few days the bandage is changed to a lighter headband. It is important to follow the instructions of your plastic surgeon regarding the use of the dressing, especially at night. Should be avoided during the first month any activity that may bend the ears.
Most people return to work after 5 days of surgery; children return to school in about 7 days.
¿RISKS? ¿GUARANTEES?
When otoplasty is performed by a qualified plastic surgeon, complications are infrequent and minor. However, as with any surgery, there are risks involved in surgery and complications of this procedure. A small percentage of patients may develop a hematoma, which dissolves spontaneously or required drainage. Occasionally, an infection of the cartilage to grow scar tissue of the ear may occur; treatment involves administration of antibiotics; rarely surgical drainage may be necessary.
COSMETIC EAR SURGERY: SUMMARY
It is an intervention frequently requested by adolescents and even children with psychological and social problems associated with deformity of the ear.
Depending on the age of the patient being treated, the procedure can be performed under general or local anesthesia. The incision is usually made behind the ear, thus leaving an almost invisible scar. From this incision the ear cartilage is reshaped, causing it to bend in the right places and removing an ellipse of skin, which is sutured.
A bandage to model ears to heal in the correct position is placed. Once removed (a week) points are removed and an elastic band is placed for two weeks to avoid during sleep ears are folded forward.
The operation result is permanent. Rarely a touch and complications, whether cutaneous or cartilage, are outstanding need.
